Coffee: All you have to know about it ⛾

Hello my beautiful people, welcome back!

Today I'm going to share with you one of my addiction... COFFEE!! Yeah, I'm a coffee lover! That's why today I'm going to share with you a little of the chemistry behind it and obviously which way is the best way to do it based on the strength of the flavor you want and the benefits that have.

What is Coffee?

As a regular definition, the coffee is a brew drink prepared from the roasted coffee beans. The coffee beans are the fruit of the coffee plant. They're different types or origins of the coffee beans, the most common is the Arabica, Robusta, Liberica, and among others.

"You know that the coffee was discover in the 11 Century in Ethopia, it's said that they discovered it through a goat, which was full of energy after eating the fruit of the plant, so they called it the magic plant. For that time, what they used was the leaf in the form of tea because they had medicinal properties."

It's called Arabica beans because it was discover in the Arabian Peninsula, where spread around the world. It wasn't until the 1668 that the coffee come to North America and in the 18th Century in Puerto Rico and the Latin America by the Spanish colonial rule. Since the coffee was cultivated in different ways and soils the coffee has been evolving and that's why today we have a great variety of coffee flavors and quality. Also, the roasted process affects the flavor of the coffee. Today there are more that 100 types of coffee beans around the world. The best coffee beans in my opinion are the Puerto Rican (of course) and Colombian coffee beans. But I love trying new flavors, since I was a little kid I has always wanted a mini coffee farm or plantation and I know that one day I will have one.

What compounds you can find in the coffee?

Image result for caffeine chemistryCoffee consumption accounts for about 75% of the adult intake of caffeine in the United States with some variations like the quantity of cups consume per day. You can find minerals, antioxidants, and active ingredientes. The principal compound or active ingredient  that you find in the coffee is the caffeine and what is that? Well, the caffeine is  an stimulant and the most commonly consumed psychoactive substance in the world. and was discover for a physician called Friedlieb Ferdinand Runge, who isolated and purified the white crystalline substance in 1819. The caffeine content of coffee varies greatly, depending on the beans, how they're roasted, and other factors, but the average for an 8-ounce cup is about 100 milligrams (mg).

Benefits for our health?

Since the coffee is one of the beverage most consume around the world, I have to share with you the benefits that it have. The coffee has a ton of benefits for your health, but remember that everything in excess can harm you including water. So with that in mind let's start with the benefits:

1. Energy
The principal benefit of the coffee is the energy that it gives you, because the coffee helps keep you awake.

2. Brain Stimulant
Since the active ingredient of the coffee is the caffeine and its primary mechanism in the brain is blocking the effects of Adenosine, which is an inhibitory neurotransmitter and by blocking this neurotransmitter, caffeine increases neuronal firing in the brain and the release of other neurotransmitters like dopamine and norepinephrine. Also, caffeine can improve mood, reaction time, memory, vigilance and general cognitive function based on different studies.

3. Burn Fat
The caffeine percent in the coffee can help you burn fat specially when you're in the fasting mode, that's why its recommendable drink black coffee during that time in addition to the 0 calories. Due the stimulant effect can raise metabolism and increase the oxidation of the fatty acids that lead to the burning of fat.

4. Improves physical performance
That's why a lot of performance like the pre-workouts have caffeine and is because of the stimulant power that the coffee have on our nervous system. The caffeine present in the coffee can mobilized the fatty acids from the fat tissues by different mechanism and it has found to improve the performance by 11-12%.

5. Lower Risk of Diabetes
The coffee is related with the lower risk of diabetes specially the diabetes type II because the coffee offer a protection  that may come from increases in the hormone adiponectin and other factors that affect insulin and blood sugar levels.

6. Lower Risk of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's
Has been found that in the Alzheimer's disease the coffee act as a protection for activity against beta-amyloid plaque that may have a causative role in Alzheimer's. The coffee reduce the risk to a 60% aprox for the Alzheimer's and dementia patients and 30-60% for the Parkinson's patients.

7. Provide nutrients and antioxidants
This are related to the lower risk of cancer, since the antioxidants and antibiotics helps to neutralize the oxide compounds related to the cancer. A cup of coffee contains approximately like 30 different minerals and antioxidants like 6% of the RDA for Pantothenic Acid (Vitamin B5), 11% of the RDA for Riboflavin (Vitamin B2), 2% of the RDA for Niacin (B3), Thiamine (B1), and like 3% of the RDA for Potassium and Manganese.

8. Skin scrub
As I said before the coffee have so many nutrients that you can use it as a skin scrub and it left your skin so beautiful and soft.

9. Good for the Liver and heart
Has been found that moderate consumption (1–3 cups a day) of coffee has been linked to a small decrease in heart attack risk. Also it has been found that lower the risk of liver diseases because the coffee has been associated with lower levels of enzymes that indicate liver damage and inflammation which are attribute the the substances found in the unfiltered coffee (Cafestol and kahweol). Coffee can lower the risk of cirrhosis by as much as 80% and liver cancer by 40% aprox., based on multiples studies.

10. Help with depression
Some studies conduct in 2011, reveals that drinking coffee (specially caffeine) help reduce depression among women.

Best way to make coffee?

In Puerto Rico are different ways to drink your coffee (like in all the world), but we made it special. The different ways are espresso(it's also called pocillo for the small cup), cortadito (is a black espresso coffee with a layer of steam milk) , Cafe con leche (traditional drink, it's like a latte but doesn't taste the same), among others. How to prepare the coffee? Well, today almost every one use the coffee maker machine because is most "convenient" and "easy", but there are different ways to prepare your coffee and get all the flavors and properties. If you want more antioxidants is better to choose the dark roast and slow drop brew or extraction and the coffee maker regular or french press. Why the slow drop/pour coffee or extraction brew, because it allows you to extract as many minerals and nutrients as possible and also reminds me of chemistry labs ♡ Yay!!
