A whole YEAR of mistakes as a Blogger

by - August 31, 2018

Hello guys, welcome back!

Today I'm going to be sharing with you all the mistakes that I did during this past year blogging! Let's start saying that is totally normal that you make a lot of mistakes when you're starting something new that you don't have a lot of information or experience in it. So, don't feel bad because you make those mistakes, instead learn from them because that way you can applied them in the future.

1. Domain

The first mistake is not buying the domain of your blog! I did it for just 2 or 3 months because I didn't know the importance and how to do it. If is not for my friend that explain me the basics I would be doing the mistake for much more time. There is a lot of sites that you can go to get you domain and they have difference prices. My friend found my name for just 0.99 cents it was an special that they has and I run to buying it before someone buy it first. Some of the sites that you can go are:

a. GoDaddy
b. Google Domains
c. NameCheap
d. BlueHost
e. Hover

Most of this sites also have a lot of other things that you would need as a blogger. Also, when you're choosing your domain you have to make sure that is a domain that the people see as "secure" or "common" depending on your niche. For example, .com, .org, .us (or depending where are you), .edu, among others.

2. Platform

Well this is really important, choose a platform that is easy to use and give you the tools and space you need. The most common platform right know is wordpress, it came in his free version  and with different upgrades. The one that I use is Blogger, is a free platform and very simple. I really tried other platforms but they have their restrictions for the free option. So that's why I decide to stay with Blogger, maybe in the future I will be moving to WordPress but for now I'm staying with Blogger and that's a tool that Blogger have, if you want to move to another platform you can by exporting all your content as long as the other platform accept the Blogger platform exportation, like WordPress. I have to say that Blogger also have their negativity like the ads, Before you choose your platform think on the things that you want to have and do your research about the platform, how it works, what you can do, the restrictions, how works the "backgrounds" or "theme", among other things. Here is a list of different platforms:

a. Blogger
b. WordPress
c. Wix
d. Weebly
e. SquareSpace

3. Scheduling

This is something that I'm still working on it, because sometimes I just feel lazy and don't want to do anything. But I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one who struggle with that. But it's really important because is a way to engage with your audience/readers. I start writing like once a week and now I'm tryong to write at least two or three times a week with varieties of topics. I don't really have a specific niche since I like to write of what I'm feeling, that's why its a lifestyle blogger and it's call one percent of something (well one of the reasons). But yeah, at the beginning I didn't schedule my post and I was in a inconsistent path. There is a lot of apps that can help you like they help me stay in schedule and be consistent. For example:

a. Writter
b. Blogger app (Or your blogging platform)
c. Buffer
d. Bloglovin'

4. Ads

Ok, this is my nightmare, I really hate ads and I really hate that they're giving me a headache. Why? Well, I have many reasons:

a. They require a lot of time
b. They just paid you a small amount for ALL the work that you do to get them ready
c. They take away your readers from your blog
d. They have a lot of restrictions
e. They said that match your content, but almost all the time don't!

I have been a complete year, trying to understand and work with them, specially with Google AdSense, but I feel so frustrating when I think that I understand it finally something new came up and it's really driving me crazy! I also try other ads company, but they reject my petition for my traffic or the options that they offer don't fall with my content. So yeah, I'm really open to suggestions and tips on how I can have a better relationship with the ads, since at the end of the day they are an option to create passive income. Here are some of the Ads Platforms:

a. Google AdSense
b. Bing Ads
c. Facebook Ads
d. Native Ads
e. InfoLinks
f. Adsterra Network
e. AdMaven

5. Affiliate & Sponsorship

Now, this is more easy to work with. Here you can look for the brands or companies that you like and goes with your style or niche. With affiliate and sponsorship programs you can contact them or they can contact you. I'm still working on it and learning more about how to approach them without looking super desperate haha even when I'm  dying inside to work with them. This kind of content is fun and obviously cost-effective because you get paid with the things you love. The best part is that you choose if you want it or not which is the opposite of the ads.

6. Self-Advertising

I'm still working on this too, because I'm still a little shy about my content and what the people would said negativity about it, so yeah. I'm always have been shy and it's something that stop me a lot, specially here in US since I'm from Puerto Rico and my English isn't that good but I have been working on it. This first year, even though I share my content I don't do it the way I'm suppose and in all my social medias, because I'm afraid of the negative things that the people could said  which I don't know why because if I'm writing something is because I want to share it with other people, so yeah I'm complicated. I decided to fight harder with my fears and shyness so I can achieve my goal as a blogger.

7. Active

Another mistake that I have been doing this past year, is not being active in the blogging world. What I mean by that? Well, as I said I have been struggling with my shyness and my English so I haven't go to any blogger activity near me, in addition that I don't have my own transportation and I hate driving standard! But you know what? At the end they're all excuses, because everything have a solution and I'm ready to implement them. So yeah, don't let the excuses take the control of your blogging life or career. If you want to do it, just do it and be active!

I hope that this post help you to achieve your blog goals and don't make the same mistakes that I did. If you do, don't forget to share with all your friends and other fellow bloggers!

Happy Friday! Love you!
